The Latest Fad of Speed Dating
I’m sure you would agree, the world is getting more and more impatient. Just as the coffee as become instant, and the markets are flooded with ready-to-eat delicacies, how could dating get left behind?
More and more we see the concept of speed dating increasing around the world. It is believed that the concept was pioneered by a Jewish Rabbi to provide a platform to outnumbered Jews. However, the trend has spread almost all over the world.
So what is it that makes speed dating so special? Well, the main reason as the names suggests is the speed and convenience. People are very busy nowadays. As a result, the conventional methods of dating have taken a back seat. Speed Dating is a special favorite among young corporate professionals. These are the people who want to meet maximum people in the shortest possible time.
There is a great deal of planning that goes into arranging a speed-dating event. The prospects are pre-screened and an attempt is made to assemble most people of the same demographic profile to get maximum ‘hits’.
When the event starts, each prospective couple is given around 10 minutes of time to sit together and discover each other. Within that period, they strike a quick conversation to explore each other’s interests and decide if they are compatible.
To avoid any kind of embarrassment, the results are not declared on the face. Rather the members express their interest after the event and are provided a chance to meet their chosen partners again after the event.
There are various reasons for the rapid popularity of Speed Dating amongst youngsters. Besides the advantage of speed, the events are full of fun and laughter. Every effort is made to ensure that the members feel comfortable and their individual sensitivities are taken care of.
Since a lot of matchmaking is done using the computer, the profiling is more logical and considers a large number of factors. Speed Dating is also very direct and even enables women to approach their prospects in an aggressive and active manner.
However, not everyone is comfortable with the speed factor in dating. People often complain that a few minutes are not enough in choosing a mate. This kind of system often works on the principal of “first impression” and that may not be a good indication of the kind of person you are courting.
There are also a lot of people who, despite being attractive and confident, are not able to strike a quick conversation with an absolute stranger. Such people are also unable to gain-in on the Speed Dating concept.
Well, despite the criticism, it appears that this concept is here to stay. If not anything else, it surely does provide a platform for fun and casual interaction to youngsters.
