What’s the Deal with Diamond Engagement Rings
It was a slick marketing campaign in the 1940’s by the de Beer’s diamond company that created the notion that you have to spend two months wages on diamond engagement rings to avoid being called cheap. Using the slogan “A Diamond is Forever” de Beer’s managed to make engagement rings a prominent status symbol in the western world. Most European countries have still not adjusted to this notion, preferring to stick with the plain gold or silver bands used as a sign of the promise to marry.
Years later men and women fought off another notion by the company to make engagement rings for men and while a few were purchased, there was not enough interest to bring the idea into vogue for men. Once the diamond ring became an important part of the wedding world, the cost of diamond engagement rings skyrocketed and for many finding an engagement ring valued at two months salary may be difficult.
Diamond prices are established by their weight, measured in carats, but the price goes up considerably when the weight goes over .99 carats. The cost of diamond engagement rings can vary from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars and many people judge a man’s wealth, as well as his feelings towards his prospective bride by the size and value of the ring.
Engagement Rings Considered Conditional Gifts
In most cases, the law views a gift as property transferred from one person to another with little wiggle room to demand return of the gift. Possibly due to the value of diamond engagement rings, there is exceptions in most states that proclaim engagement rings are conditional gifts, and if the engagement is called off, the law requires the ring to be returned to the giver.
The majority of the cost and value of engagement rings is obviously in the size and cut of the stone, however the setting is an important part of the beauty of the entire piece. Gold, silver, platinum are some of the more common metals used for the rings in which to set the diamond. And many European countries, while shunning the notion of diamond engagement rings, will use diamonds in the wedding bands, even for men.
Most men will pick out the ring before asking the woman to marry them, although with many couples choosing to live together prior to marriage it is not uncommon for both parties to choose the engagement and wedding rings.
